Paul Smith and Politics

When first looking at the artist work, it made me think of the different wars that this country has went throughout history. At first glance, I thought of Iraq and the non- details that the media does not talk about. I like this picture because I think it gives an inside source to what the media is trying to cover up about the war. I also like how the artist used himself throughout the picture. This could also show how the U.S. reacts the same ways to most wars as well as how most wars always have the same ending results. The sternest in the author's face makes the viewer see that what the picture is displaying is very important to him. This picture also shows what soldiers have to go through everyday. I believe that the author was trying to show what most men have to go through, if the drafting laws were still in place. This picture could also show the growth of most men and their occupations. Looking at the picture, it could also represent the life and death of a soldier and how easy it is to be killed in the war.

I believe that the artist could have improved this by displaying the setting more. An example would be actually having a battle scene happening as the background of the soldiers burying a comrade. The artist could have made the background in the woods instead of the beach in order for it to show the life of a soldier.

Paul Smith created a portfolio called Artist's Rifles to display the growth and maturity in his own life. In his blog, he talks about how these pictures was his way of showing masculinity as well as how he feels about joining the army. He said that these pictures were actually role playing for him that he learned while he was a child. And because of this, playing a soldier was easy. In this specific portfolio, he displayed different wars that took place throughout history. An example from his blog would be the Spanish War. The whole portfolio describes a narrative of the good and bad of war.
